Introduction from the Coordinator to Final Report of the INTEGAIRE project

Air quality is a major concern for many European cities and is one of the fields where the European Union has been most active in. Cities are working towards a sustainable situation in which all citizens enjoy a good quality of life as well as clean air.

INTEGAIRE was designed to respond to this particular need of cities. Throughout its life, the project allowed cities to efficiently influence the European agenda on air quality and a trustful cooperation has been built between the European Commission and the cities. The project partners have shared experiences, compared achievements and managed to elaborate a set of recommendations for future regulatory approaches, for particular research and funding needs as well as a guidance tool for cities with concrete examples in air quality related issues. It is hoped that these good instruments will support cities to achieve their aims and objectives as regards air quality management and assessment.

INTEGAIRE partners believe that joint research, effective environmental technologies, active collaboration and awareness rising are key elements to achieve optimum levels of air quality without risks to human health or the environment. All stakeholders need to act at different levels in order to reduce exposure to air pollution: through legislation, through work at the wider international level in order to reduce cross-border pollution, through working with sectors responsible for air pollution, with national, regional, local authorities, NGOs and through the research community.

The INTEGAIRE partners will set up a European platform for air quality professionals in order to continue this life-long learning process on air quality and ensure the involvement and collaboration of all interested stakeholders within cities and at European level. We welcome any support of interest for this particular action.

We sincerely hope that you will enjoy reading this final report and that this latter will give you the necessary input to quickly progress in tackling air quality challenges.
