1.  The INTEGAIRE project    [Back to top]

Air quality is a major concern for many European cities and is one of the fields where the European Union has been most active in. Cities are working towards a sustainable situation in which all citizens enjoy a good quality of life as well as clean air.

INTEGAIRE is a research project which started in March 2002 and finalised in February 2005. It was designed to respond to this particular need of cities, allowing them to efficiently influence the European agenda and promoting cooperation between cities and the European Commission.

The INTEGAIRE Project has three main target groups:

i) Cities: INTEGAIRE has produced a set of key issues with recommendations to cities and best practice examples. This information is compiled in the Guide for Cities.

ii) DG Environment: INTEGAIRE has sent recommendations towards the development of the CAFE (Clean Air For Europe) Programme which is shaping the Thematic Strategy on Air Pollution.

iii) DG Research: INTEGAIRE gives recommendations from the urban perspective on research priorities in the field of urban air quality. The recommendations are aimed at being used as a direct input for the ongoing preparation of the 7th Framework Programme for Research.

After the completion of the project, the consortium agreed to continue the work done and exploit the outcomes through an EU-INTEGAIRE Platform of Air quality experts which will be managed by EUROCITIES, previous coordinator of INTEGAIRE.

2.  The EU-INTEGAIRE Platform    [Back to top]

Active collaboration and awareness-raising are the keys to achieve optimum levels of air quality without risks to human health or the environment.

Today, air pollution legislation is based on a common framework in EU countries and INTEGAIRE has found that cities in Europe have similar problems.

In order to keep cooperation alive and dynamic, the INTEGAIRE partners have set up a European-INTEGAIRE Platform on air quality experts.  All interested stakeholders within cities and at European level are able to make progress in tackling air quality challenges.

3.  Objectives of the EU-INTEGAIRE Platform    [Back to top]

The EU-INTEGAIRE Platform project aims:

  1. To continue the dialogue and cooperation between cities started within the INTEGAIRE project.
  2. To be the basis for exchanging different experiences and best practices implemented by cities.
  3. The development of future project proposals on air quality if opportunities may arise.

4.  Benefits of the EU-INTEGAIRE Platform    [Back to top]
  1. This Platform is a very practical way to exploit the good outcomes of the INTEGAIRE project.
  2. The exchange of best practices will contribute to improving the air quality situation in European cities.
  3. The Platform means an excellent way for city professionals to keep updated on air quality challenges, ideas, initiatives and problems.
  4. This exchange of information might provide solutions to air quality problems in those cities where air quality is still a threat.

5.  Members of the EU-INTEGAIRE Platform    [Back to top]
  1. Who can join the platform?

Any air quality expert is invited to join the Platform.  Therefore, any expert from cities, regions, Member States or anyone on an individual basis is welcome to join this Platform.  The purpose will be to allow them to make their statement, exchange information and contribute to better tackling air quality challenges and problems.

  1. How to join the platform?

Any interested professional must fill in the registration form to be able to participate in the Platform and share ideas and information. You may also view a list of people who have already registered publicly.

6.  Connection with EUROCITIES Working Group on Climate Change and Air Quality    [Back to top]

This EUROCITIES Working Group is focusing on Climate Change and Air Quality EU legislation. It also aims at carrying out a survey on good solutions and practices as well as research on emission from road tunnels. These are some of the issues were cooperation and exchange of information could be very profitable to both this EUROCITIES WG and the EU-INTEGAIRE Platform.

This cooperation could be complemented with joint meetings whenever there is a need for a specific discussion on air quality.

7.  Future actions    [Back to top]

  1. As the Thematic Strategy on Air Pollution is now to be adopted shortly, a meeting before the end of 2005 might be arranged for the members of the Platform and also for the members of the EUROCITIES WG on Climate Change and Air Quality.
  2. It is planned to disseminate information through the Platform Bulletin Board and by e-mail.   A mailing list will be created once the future members register.  Anyone in this list will be able to send information to the Coordinator of the Platform (EUROCITIES) who will disseminate it to the rest of the group.

8.  Bulletin Board    [Back to top]

Extensive discussions can take place through a bulletin board set up to this effect (you will need to register first to obtain a username and password).  Any member can add ideas, suggestions and comments. These discussions can also be addressed by e-mail on a regular basis.  A main discussion theme in the short term will be the content and implementation of the Thematic Strategy on Air Pollution which is to be adopted in summer.

9.  E-mail    [Back to top]

EUROCITIES will act as the coordinator of this Platform.  The members who wish to send information any time have to address themselves to EUROCITIES.  Then this information will be disseminated by EUROCITIES to the other members and posted on the website.

10.  CLEAR Cluster    [Back to top]

INTEGAIRE is also part of the Cluster of European Air Quality Research of European Research, “CLEAR” (Homepage: www.nilu.no/clear).

CLEAR aims at:

  1. Improving knowledge and scientific resources so that stakeholders have the best solutions to tackle air pollution.
  2. Identifying options to improve urban air quality in line with European initiatives.
  3. Strengthening the links between technology, science and the citizens, optimizing the local decision-making process.

11.  Partners’ documents    [Back to top]

Any member can send any relevant document on air quality to EUROCITIES.  IT will then be posted in the website in this section.

15.  Meetings    [Back to top]

The EU-INTEGAIRE Platform has scheduled a joint meeting with the EUROCITIES Working Group on Climate Change and Air Quality for the 19th of October in Bristol. The meeting will start at 9.00 and will end at approximately 16.30.

We kindly invite you to attend the meeting and give your contribution towards a better air quality for all. This meeting is supposed to bring together experts on air quality and promote exchange of knowledge and best practices. The meeting will also be the ground to discuss the new EU-INTEGAIRE Platform, establish actions and the best strategy for follow up.

Cooperation between the EU-INTEGAIRE Platform and the EUROCITIES Working Group on Climate Change and Air Quality will also be discussed.

The reaction/response to the Thematic Strategy on Air Pollution (expected by September 2005) will also be an issue. This Thematic Strategy is going to provide an overview of the existing policies and set the scenarios that the EU aims to achieve on air quality.

To attend the meeting you just need to download the registration form and send it by the 23rd September to Eva Banos. Please also see the agenda for more details.
